The first visit of the Holdens, a famous family of English puppeteers, to France in 1879 triggered a veritable "Holdenomania" among French itinerant puppeteers. While the Holdens themselves have been the subject of recent research, their influence on fairground puppet theater has not yet been explored. This article begins to fill this gap, using fairground theater in France as a case study.
